PS3 Pre-orders five times that of Wii in NZ

PS3's boxed - Image 1Wii owners are delighted with the fact that many more Wii consoles have been sold than PS3s worldwide, with the small console from Nintendo steadily catching up with the Xbox 360.

However, although the cheaper console may have prevailed in total units sold, perhaps due to it’s price, it does seem that the PS3 has been more eagerly-awaited, with more people pre-ordering Sony’s console.

Here’s the confirmation from New Zealand, with Dick Smith merchandise manager James Cunnold claiming that “[PS3] pre-orders are five times that of Nintendo Wii,” as well as going above any pre-orders received for the original Playstation 1, 2, or the Xbox 360.

The New Zealand Herald has dubbed the PS3 a ‘$1200 toy’, but sales figures for the console prove it’s not just a toy: it’s a complete home entertainment system.

Not all is good down under though, as New Zealanders will have to wait until Monday 26th March before 9 alleged ‘launch titles’ for the console are released, and some reports claim a shortage of Dual Shock 3 controllers, although Sony will have shipped more by next week.
