Rage won’t work well on three DVDs but Doom 4 will, says Carmack

Last year, id Software generated some… rage for the shooter/racer hybrid Rage when the issue of the Xbox 360 version being gimped due to the lack of disk space cropped up. id has since clarified that the decision to split Rage‘s 360 version over two discs hasn’t gimped it in any way. But why only two? They would have been able to fit in more textures if they went with three DVDs, right? Perhaps, but id co-founder John Carmack says that the nature of the game doesn’t allow for it to be spread across three DVDs.

We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game justÂ…we canÂ’t cut it into a third like that. We can cut it into two pieces. WeÂ’ve got two large wastelands on there. We just couldnÂ’t make an arbitrary cut.

Although the two large wastelands featured in Rage requires a two-disc split, Doom 4, on the other hand, will not have the same restrictions.

Doom 4 is being set up so that itÂ’s almost certainly going to be cut up to 3 DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least theyÂ’ve got the ability because of the way itÂ’s structured.

Rage is currently scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 next year. No target launch has yet been announced for Doom 4.
