Read My Lips: No Xbox Handheld
It’s time to move on and put all your Xbox handheld dreams to bed because UK Xbox executive Neil Thompson has dropped a bomb: a handheld Xbox machine is NOT in development.
When T3 asked whether he could categorically state that Microsoft is not currently developing a handheld gaming device, Thomson said, Yes, a pocket-sized Xbox isnÂ’t on the cards. WeÂ’re not even thinking about that at the moment. Handhelds, in the way you would think about a handheld like a PSP? No. The mobile phone market offers us a really good opportunity to capitalise on the hundreds of millions of handsets that are out there, and give people a chance to connect that with other entertainment experiences.
Microsoft has not thrown in the gauntlet, leaving Nintendo DS and PSP to duel for the handheld supremacy. Though there is an air of finality in Thompson’s statements, I can’t help but think that the decision is just for the here and now. Who knows, an Xbox handheld may just see the light of day in the near future, when you least expect it.
