Ready at Dawn on “The Future of PSP”

IGN is on a PSP roll, with one set of questions passed on to every developer they could get their hands on. Although the ones who have actually responded were fewer than they had hoped, that’s still a lot of surveying to do. So any developer who did voluntarily participate in IGN’s feature of “The Future of PSP” had to answer six common questions about the PSP:

  • What have you learned from PSP?
  • How do you approach PSP development?
  • How tough are the budgets on PSP games?
  • What can Sony could do for developers?
  • What features of PSP need to be pushed?
  • What is the future of PSP?

Ready at Dawn, folks behind zany platformer Daxter, answered their call and rushed to IGN’s aid with kegs of beer and a lifesaver tube, in order to give their two-cents worth on the PSP’s destiny. Either that, or R.A.D. (not short for rapid application development, mind you) dropped by to hint on their new title in the works. First order of business, however, came down to Daxter. Yeah that’s been said and done, so let’s hop right over to the order of the day.

Yeah that’s been said and done, so let’s hop right over to the order of the day.

What has R.A.D. learned from PSP? PSP owners don’t want to be treated like second-rate citizens. They want games that are just as cool as the PlayStation 3, but they also want original content. Wow, right on the spot. Let’s have a swig of what he’s drinking…

How does R.A.D. approach PSP development? They always put their own little spin on projects. They develop their titles one game at a time, so they can focus on a particular platform. Right now, it’s the PSP they’ve got they eyes glued on. Technology wise, they keep the engines and graphics ahead of the actual game development cycle, so the base rendering system is there when they put the project into full swing.

How tough, in R.A.D.’s opinion, are the budgets on PSP games? The guys behind God of War just want to stay at the high-end of “the spectrum.” Well, that is true, if you consider PlayStation 2 and the PSP as the high-end performers for your kind of gaming. Expect their quality of games to be maximized out for each platform wherever they can, whenever they can.

What, in R.A.D.’s opinion, can Sony could do for developers? R.A.D. says, “Bump up the CPU clock to 333Mhz!” Bartender, another one of what he’s having… What features of PSP, in R.A.D.’s opinion, need to be pushed? They want more tools and engines available for the platform. That way, they could spend more time creating a great game, than wondering what to do next with their own engine.

What does R.A.D. see in the future of PSP? They believe it’s bringing in a new crowd for handheld gaming, for gamers who’ve never experienced that type of power in a hand-held device before. The PSP was never, in their opinion, in direct competition with other handhelds. That said, we believe that’s all folks!
