Resistance: Fall of Man – An Interview with Ted Price

rfomE3 has come and gone but Insomniac Games‘ demo of Resistance: Fall of Man remains the talk of the town. The sci-fi First Person Shooter game, which stunned the audience at Sony’s pre-E3 conference, takes place in an alternate history in which Europe has fallen to a mysterious species. In a chat with Gamehelper, Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price revealed bits of info about the game’s storyline.

Those who’ve seen the demo assumed that the game is about an alien race that landed on the planet and starts to invade almost all of Europe. But Price was quick to point out that the origin of the species as well as the storyline are something to discover as part of the game. As you play the game, you uncover more clues about the Chimera and their world, and how they are different from ours.

Price may have not revealed much about the storyline, but he willingly gave out other details: The main character is a U.S. Ranger named Nathan Hale, and you might appreciate that because heÂ’s a descendant of the Nathan Hale from the Revolutionary War who was a patriot for the United States but a traitor for Britain. So, itÂ’s kind of ironic that heÂ’s helping out by going to England. But, heÂ’s kind of unique because heÂ’s one of the few survivors of the USÂ’s initial foray into England. The US is hoping to to save the day, but they get slaughtered in the process.

Hale has regenerating health, which Price said will come handy in the game, ThereÂ’s a reason for that, but you find out about it in the game; you can probably try to fill in the blanks on your own, but the story really drives the game. We spent a lot of time establishing what we think is a very comprehensive timeline leading up to the game so that weÂ’re not leaving any gaps. One of the things that weÂ’ve noticed about games that have a thin story is that when people donÂ’t think itÂ’s real it just falls apart. WeÂ’ve spent a lot of time making sure this is a story that works.

The game takes place in England so expect to go through real cities like Manchester and London. The cities are laid out the same way they are laid out in real life. You’d be able to recognize then except that they’re blown to hell.

Asked what he enjoyed the most about working on the game, Price answered, Weapons. Weapons and enemy design. I think a lot of us at Insomniac really love coming up with exotic weapons. WeÂ’ve got a lot of guys whoÂ’ve just gone nuts with the weapon designs. WeÂ’re only showing a few here, but weÂ’ve got some in development right now that are going to be some great additions to the first person shooter genre. The characters have also been a lot of fun to design because the Chimera are not just humanoids.
