Last July, a Homebrew contest for the best Rubik’s Cube program was set by DevsGen. The prize for said contest is US$ 500. Here are the four entries from four French programmers. Please note that these programs do not come with a readme file so users are advised to use the apps with caution.

The second programmer to submit an entry was Alcantor. The program provides a basic menu and offers alternative modes of play with a 2×2, 4×4 and 5×5 cube. The program also offers an alternative visual interface, offering a “flat” cube instead of a 3D one.

The site describes the “flat” interface to be professional and good for commercial distribution.

The third programmer to submit an entry was Seb and calls the program simply “The Cube.”. His program is also straightforward and simple but offers a menu and a music feature. The program also has an autosaving feature.

Rubik's Cube by Quadrizo - Image 1

The fourth programmer to submit an entry was Quadrizo. This program may be the most different of the four, employing a “mirror” concept that lets you see the cube from different sides all at once.

The program employs a ring that indicates which row you are currently turning. The size of the cube can also be extended to have a 4×4 or 5×5 grid. The program can also change the “stickers” on the cube to have a different image, even one with numbers on it (described as a kind of Sudoku approach).
