Rumor: Xbox 360 Core to be discontinued?

It’s been a while since we reported on a yet-unconfirmed rumor about the Xbox 360 Core SKU being repackaged as the Xbox 360 Arcade SKU. Now, here’s an update-of-sorts that not only ties to that rumor, but also could confirm it. Yes, folks, word on the grape vine is that Microsoft is now in the process of discontinuing the Xbox 360 Core system.

This news comes from an e-mail apparently sent to GameStop owners, informing them to pull down all signs advertising the Xbox 360 Core SKU – for the reason that there won’t be any new shipments of the Core system itself after current store stocks have sold out.

Rumor or not, it ties in neatly with the repackaging of the Core to the Arcade SKU. After the supplies of the Core system has run out, Microsoft then comes into the scene and fills all those empty store shelves with Arcade systems. And from the looks of things, this should coincide with the holiday gift-buying craze – which would make the Xbox 360 Arcade SKU, marketed towards non-gamers, a stiff competitor of the Nintendo Wii.

Certainly a rather surprising twist coming from Microsoft. Keep it locked right here as we keep a close eye at them rumors.
