Sega: Third Parties Should Shape Up or Else…

Scott SteinbergIt seems that the Wii is acquiring more allies in the gaming business nowadays. Sega VP of marketing, Scott Steinberg, gave a stern reminder to all third parties: Shape up and get on board with the mighty Wii vessel or ship out and miss the luxury boat that is the Wii.

Mr. Steinberg also said that that Sega has been “on the Wii bandwagon from day one” pointing out that the firm is preparingSuper Monkey Ball Banana Blitzfor launch and Sonic Wildfire for Q1 2007, and that they won’t get caught flat-footed when it comes to having games ready for the launch window.

He also expressed his disdain for other third party game developers’ “lack of imagination when dealing with this new platform (Wii).” He conveyed that merely upgrading the game is not good enough, since new games for a new console requires the necessary thinking and creativity — lucky for Sega, they have those creative people; sadly, he just can’t say the same for the others. He also mentions that their ‘tight’ relationship with Nintendo was a big help, and that some third parties just don’t do a damn good job in ‘wooing’ Nintendo. Wow, I didn’t know that the gaming biz is pretty much like dating.

And just like the statements of EA‘s VP Jeff Brown, the Sega VP believes that the Wii has a mighty good chance of closing the gap with Sony in the next-gen console wars. The reason for that statement? “There is a feature creep going on in the platform wars so it’s refreshing to see someone do something different. It’s refreshing to see someone take themselves out and operate in a different paradigm.”
