Shigeru Miyamoto – Explain The Name
Kotaku released a video in which they sit down with Shigeru Miyamoto and ask where the name ‘Wii’ came from. In his native tongue (convienetly subtitled for American viewers), Miyamoto explains that he wanted a name that did not sound like a video game system in order to ensure that the system would appeal to a broad audience.
Miyamoto also makes the quotation figure gesture when mentioning the name ‘Wii,’ implying that they wanted the name ‘Wii’ to be a pun on ‘We.’ If you ask me, they could have came up with something less pee-pee related. Doesn’t Mr. Miyamoto know that Americans have dirty minds?
