Shipping of Blu-ray players to increase sixfold

Blu-ray disc - Image 1Blu-ray has pretty much taken the cake in Europe and Japan territories, leaving HD-DVD in the dust. In the US, however, the little success PS3 is having gives a major advantage to HD-DVD, thanks to Xbox 360 popularity. Even so, Sony is not giving up the fight. Instead, the efforts of pushing Blu-ray players will increase sixfold this year.

Sony’s US home products division senior vice president Randy Waynick stated in a meeting that Sony may ship 600,000 units this year from last year’s 100,000, reports Bloomberg. Upcoming Blu-ray titles are expected to boost sales, as 14 to 15 out of 20 blockbusters that will reach high-def format are Blu-ray exclusive.

“You’ll see growth in multiples of five or six times for Blu-ray player shipments in the U.S. in 2007 from a year earlier. A lot of that will depend how competitive it becomes,” Waynick said.
