Sony introduces Playstation Network Ticket for credit-less Japanese

If you’re one of those teenagers or adults who have a PS3 and money but don’t have a credit card, you’re in luck. Through the powers of online translation services, we’ve recently found out that Sony will be selling something called the PlayStation Network Ticket, a new form of virtual currency you can use with the PSN to buy your favorite games and online goodies.

From our understanding of the new press release they have, the PlayStation Network Tickets use an EDY system native to Japan. This means two things: that these new smart cards for PlayStation Network purchases will probably remain limited to Japan for a little while, and that if our understanding of the EDY system is accurate, will require a EDY reader that’s compatible with PlayStation 3 to work. Nice enough if you know the tech, we suppose, but it’d be even better if there was a friendlier American and European version too.

The PlayStation Network Ticket will sell in 52,000 locations across Japan come June, focusing mostly on convenience stores, post offices, and ATMs. The tickets will carry ¥1000, ¥3,000, ¥5,000, and ¥10,000 denominations.
