Sony is a bit frustrated with the commercial performance of the PlayStation Portable last year, as the latest numbers have shown. Speaking at Sony’s earnings call yesterday, CFO Bill Glaser said:

“PS2 is entering its 11th year this year, and it’s amazing it is still contributing. PSP was a little bit of a disappointment to us last year.”

With the horrendous sales of the PSP Go, rumors of a supposed next gen iteration of the handheld have been circulating around the iterwebs, with the latest speculation pointing at next month’s E3 conference as the likely venue for its unveiling. Adding fuel to the fire, the executive revealed that Sony is already exploring new gaming hardware:

“We’re always looking into future platforms as well. Very premature to talk about future platforms, but R&D is continuing,”
