LittleBigPlanet 2‘s been in the news for a few days now. It’s high time for an official announcement, and that’s just what Sony released today.

Among the features the sequel boasts are a revamped graphics engine, a fresh storyline, and added accessories and equipment for Sackboy. There’s also a buffed-up Create Mode that lets players “make actual games, not just levels”.

“Since LittleBigPlanet launched, our online community has created an amazing selection of levels with the tools available,” said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president of product marketing at SCEA.

“With LittleBigPlanet 2, users will now have a new, evolved Create mode with the ability to make actual games, not just levels, providing an endless gaming adventure for fans, as well as an entertainment experience that can be enjoyed by the entire family.”

The new Create Mode now lets players reset the controls and rules for any object, so everything from racing games to shooters are fair game. Also included are some new multiplayer abilities that adds life meters, scoring, and other such elements. Players can even make their own cutscenes now.

Best of all, LittleBigPlanet 2 is backwards compatible with the original LittleBigPlanet, so those who buy the sequel still have access to all the online levels created in the original.
