Sony, Toshiba confirm production line deal

Sony PlayStation 3 - Image 1Sony and Toshiba have confirmed earlier rumors of a Sony-Toshiba production line deal. Both companies have announced the signing of a non-binding memorandum of understanding expressing their intent to establish a new joint venture.

Toshiba will have controlling ownership of the as yet unnamed venture with a 60 percent stake. Both Sony and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) each have 20 percent ownership of the company. The joint venture is expected to be established in April next year.

The joint venture will be producing high-performance semiconductors such as the Cell Broadband Engine and the RSX graphics engine. Toshiba will also be acquiring 300mm wafer line fabrication facilities from Sony by the end of March 2008. Upon transfer, the facilities will then be operated by the new joint venture.
