Sony’s DualShock 3 running on DualShock 2 tech

Sony's DualShock 3 will carry DS2's rumble features - Image 1Even for Sony‘s recently announced DualShock 3 for the PlayStation 3, there’s no school like the old school.

During a recent inquiry, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s (SCEA) Kimberly Otzman explained that instead of creating some new technology for the new controller, the company instead opted for the classic rumble function found in their previous controllers.

“The rumble feature on the DualShock 3 is the same as DualShock 2,” she said. Another interesting detail that SCEA’s spokesman revealed – and we imagine you guys would love to know – was DualShock 3’s power consumption. As Otzman explained:

When the rumble feature is completely turned off, it’s equivalent with the Sixaxis (maximum of 30 hours) and when the rumble feature is active it’s about 15 hours, under SCE standard testing conditions.

So activating the rumble feature cuts your run time in half. We don’t imagine this should pose that big a problem, though we advise the guys to keep that USB cable (preferably an extra-long cable) handy should your controller die during your Warhawk binge.

Sony’s DualShock 3 controller for the PS3 is currently expected to ship to Japan this November, with a North American and European release scheduled for 2008. Drop by QJ’s DualShock fact sheet to see what games have been confirmed to work with its rumble.
