Sony-Toshiba production line deal to conclude spring 2008?

Sony-Toshiba deal to conclude spring 2008? - Image 1About a month ago, we reported that Sony was undergoing plans to sell some of its microchip-producing facilities to Toshiba for a sum of Â¥ 100 billion (US$ 869.7 million). We’ll be updating today with more information regarding this sale, based on reports coming from two people familiar with the sale (and a request to remain annonymous).

According to their information, the two production lines that will be subject to this transaction are based in Sony’s factories in Nagasaki and Oita prefectures on Kyushu island, Japan. These production lines are the same ones that manufacture chips for the company’s PlayStation 3. The sources further report that this Sony-Toshiba agreement is expected to conclude by spring of next year.

“We are considering various options to strengthen our chip business, but nothing specific about such a reported sale has been decided,” said Toshiba spokesman Keisuke Omori regarding the transaction. Sony spokesman Tomio Takizawa declined to comment regarding the deal.

In connection with this news, Sony recently announced that it has joined forces with Infineon Technologies AG, as part of a move to further cut down development costs for its consumer electronics division. Their current transaction with Toshiba appears to be following the same path. We’ll let you know if either Sony or Toshiba makes any official announcements regarding their deal.
