StarCraft 2 Q&A: of time bombs, monstrous assault units, macro over micro

Here’s yet another Q&A, as Blizzard sheds light on how StarCraft 2‘s development is going, and what to expect on its release “when it’s done.” This time, it’s a hodgepodge of gameplay mechanics that StarCraft fans wanted to know about.

To give players more options to counter the dreaded Terran Nuclear Missile, the Protoss Mothership is equipped with the Time Bomb ability which is formidable in the hands of the skillful.

Another worth noting in what the devs were willing to reveal was the reason for making the Thor. Contrary to popular belief, despite its size, this monster equipped with “Thor’s Hammer” and a 250mm bombardment cannon is more of an assault unit unlike long ranged Siege Tanks.

When Blizzard mentioned multiple building selection (MBS), many hardcore StarCraft fans raised their eyebrows, while some shook their heads wondering if newbies could now compete against those with advanced macro and micro skills. Fortunately, it looks like the developers are aware of this concern. Blizzard said:

It is our goal to allow players to micro more vs. macro more. This is something that was great about the original StarCraft and it is something we want to maintain while we add new mechanics as well as interface features. We are still evaluating such features as automine as well as MBS. We don’t have an answer for this at the moment, but we are working on it.
