The future of mages’ mana gems

Mana Gems, courtesy of WoW Wiki - Image 1There was a time, long ago, when mana gems could make or break a prolonged fight. Nowadays, the efficacy of mana gems is negligible, especially since the level cap has been raised and no changes have been made to keep mana gems competitively useful in-game.

This is the observation of many mages, and one which Hideous of Shadowsong asks an important question about. Are there any plans to give mages better mana gems, or will there be changes to mana gems to make them more useful in the future?

Currently, no answers have been given about any upgrades to mana gems, though Blizzard poster Aeus did post a (rather short) comment on the thread, noting that better mana gems were needed.

While the mage community is currently wondering about whether or not this spell will get improvements in the future, we do have to wonder. Do you guys think mana gems are currently gimped? More importantly, what utility spells in your classes could use some buffing in the near future?
