Video: Fils-Aime says Nintendo ready for holiday Wii rush

Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime - Image 1Wii sales lording over its video game console counterparts isn’t exactly new, and with its direction leaning more towards the casual gaming market, Nintendo cashing in on more Wii sales is expected. What’s starting to be a concern from Ninty bigwigs though, is the growing risk of having shortages in Wiis for public and with the holiday season creeping in, the supply issues are escalating.

Fortunately, Nintendo of America (NoA) president Reggie Fils-Aime has revealed in an interview with Mercury news that their company is putting Wii production in high gear in preparation for the expected rush this Christmas. As a reassurance to the rabid fans of the motion-sensing machine, Fils-Aime said:

The good news is that we’re flowing more and more product into the marketplace and the amount of Wii hardware [that] will be in North American stores will be unprecedented — substantially more than the launch, substantially more than has been seen to date.

This may be a slight confirmation to the earlier supposition that Nintendo is making a push to divert Wii supplies towards North American shores. However, in recognition of the exponentially growing demand for their product, Fils-Aime warns that despite their efforts, some folks may still find it hard to snag a Wii. He said:

The bad news is that given the level of demand, and given the fact that the more we put in the more we sell, it is still going to be difficult to get [your] hands on the Wii… All major retailers will have regular supply, and so as consumers you need to regularly check out your Wal-Mart, Target, GameStop, Best Buy, Circuit City, Toys ‘R Us — all of those key retailers. Talk to the manager and find out when they get their regular shipments, and try to get there when the product comes in. It’s going to be flowing in every week, but the fact is that currently demand outstrips supply on a worldwide basis.

There you have it, fair warning directly from a man behind the big N. Christmas may still be a good number of weeks ahead, but with the ‘ber months officially here, it may be time to start considering an early purchase.
