Video game violence is risky because of “smear campaigns” says Capcom

Even with Capcom‘s popular violent franchises like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, the company’s financial report still shows that they’re careful about the media and “smear campaigns” against video game content.

Found by Colin Campbell and posted on his blog, Capcom had a list of risks when developing a game. The 4th entry was none other than “Violent Scenes and Depictions”.

Apparently, Capcom considers “smear campaigns” by mass media a risk, and something to watch out for when making a game. “There is a risk that it may result in having an adverse effect on our business performance, corporate value and narrowed distribution channel”, says a note in the financial report.

Fortunately, there haven’t been much attacks against Capcom by senators or lawyers that somehow like to pick on the video game industry when other forms of media have worse content. Rockstar takes most of the heat, thanks to their GTA series. It’s probably not offensive enough when the Spaniards you’re beheading are infected with some virus, or you’re trying to cut a young woman in half (… or maybe GTA just takes the most heat nowadays).
