Voice integration, better search feature coming to Second Life

It’s been three and a half years since Second Life first burst in on the MMORPG scene and even now, Linden Lab is still hard at work enhancing some of the features that their popular virtual world offers. PC World recently had a chat with Linden Lab vice president Joe Miller, who clues us in on some of the features that will be seeing an overhaul sometime soon.

One of these is the integration of voice communication. “Obviously we want voice to be an important part of the Second Life fabric,” said Miller. “If you walk up to someone who is voice enabled you’ll be able to just start a conversation. You won’t have to run anything else, or do anything else: just speak to someone or a group of people as you engage in a conversation today in a room.”

Another feature that Linden Lab’s internal team is working on is the search function. “When you come in as a casual user, it’s tough to find the interesting things that are happening. We want to improve the search capabilities. We also created an API (application programming interface) to let our business customers create their own front porches into Second Life.”

Of course, now that Linden Lab has released the code of Second Life‘s viewer application as open source, it could just be a matter of time before external software developers come up with something similar to what the people at Linden Lab themselves are working on.
