Warhawk TGS 06 hands-on – plus a bonus trailer!

TGS 2006: PS3

One of the sweet expectations surrounding Incognito/SCEA‘s Warhawk is the online multiplayer mode. Ah, to roam and dominate the skies at will, owning every six-o’clock dumb enough to take off from the ground. While the E3 demo showed off the PS3’s tilt-sensing controller, the TGS demo showed off the game’s multiplayer combat. 16 players can duke it out in the skies and on the ground for – in the case of this Gamespot hands-on – team supremacy.

Controls have improved enough to impress the hands-on previewer and earn his approval. It was easier to get into and get the hang of, he says, than it was during E3. This was for both flight and ground combat – although the first thing everyone did once the team deathmatch started was to hog all the aircraft, sooner or later they all returned to the ground for some real fighting. Besides the jets, players will also be able to tear up the battlefield in surface vehicles, including a tank and a jeep.

To deal with all this heavy metal flying about, players will be able to collect eight different weapons at one time, including that FPS staple, the rocket launcher (very useful for anti-vehicle work). To aid them in identifying these weapons scattered on the ground, they will be represented on the battlefield by different colors, something well appreciated by the previewer. Weapons selection will be handled with the D-pad.

The game’s certainly has come farther in the time between E3 and TGS. It’s not the most visually impressive game in the PS3 library, says the hands-on, but it’s an enjoyable romp nonetheless. In the meanwhile, let us leave you with Warhawk‘s latest official trailer to show what this game can do:
