Wii and DS details from the Nintendo Conference
Nintendo of Japan recently hosted a small event where representatives announced some new software and some details for the DS and the Wii. They confirmed that here will be at least 18 games released in Japan before the end of the year, more than thirty games out in North America by the end of this year.
Japanese gamers are expecting over 60 Virtual Console games this year. ThatÂ’s around 30 titles from the Famicom, the Super Famicom, and the Nintendo 64 consoles, and around 30 from the Mega Drive and PC engine formats. However, they did not reveal any specific games.
They also discussed their plan of starting up an event they plan to call “Nintendo World 2006”. The goal of the event would be to bring the Wii/DS people together so they can play both systems, and understand what itÂ’s all about. Nintendo announced three dates and the corresponding locations of the these events happening on said dates. See the dates and the events’ locations:
- 11/03/06: Nagoya
- 11/12/06: Osaka
- 11/25/06/11/2606: Tokyo
WhatÂ’s good about these events is that admission is free. Oh those lucky Japanese. Anyway, we hope that Nintendo will try to embark on a free Wii/DS-only event like this in the US.

As for the software stuff, a release window was announced for Big Brain Academy. ItÂ’s sometime during the first quarter of 2007. TheyÂ’ll also be releasing a product called Wii Compact Software during that time, which so far seems to be some kind of downloadable app. Another mysterious project is called Health Pack (its code name) for the Wii. Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Gamecube will be sold online only in Japan.
For the DS, a new cooking guide titled “DS Menu Collection” was announced. It will have round 1000 built-in recipes. The cooking “game” has a magnet stand so you can put your DS on your fridge while you cook. The magnet stand will cost around 1200yen. It’s also Wi-Fi compatible. Not really sure for what yet; perhaps a Wii connection? Well just have to wait I guess.

What else was shown during the event? Hmm. Oh yeah, they showed more Wii experience videos. It’s sort of nice to see how awkward some of them look and how some of them just seem to “let it all go.” That’s the Wii for you. Anyway, what is it about the Wii ad-campaign that inspires so many spoofs? Here’s a weird one we just found.
