Wii Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Hands On

mp3During the NYC event, Kotaku was able to play with Samus on the Metroid Prime 3: Corruption demo, and the general impression? It’s gonna be one helluva great first-person shooter with absolute control via the Wiimote and Nunchuk.

Well yeah, there were a few controller issues here and there, like there were times when the game lost the controller, but we’re hoping it was because of the bluetooth overload at the event rather than defects in the game itself.

The MP3 demo at NYC showed a never-before-seen game level and from the environments and design, we will see that Retro Studios still hasn’t lost their touch. The game’s design features tunnel areas, interior spaceship scenes, spacecraft areas that would remind one of Prey, and other scenes where you drift between ships in space. The characters featured in the game include Samus, Dark Samus, the Galactic Federation and new bounty hunters. Here are more key info you might want to know:

Controls: Players will get to control Samus by moving with the Nunchuk controller and aiming with the pointer. Experience first-person control through the eyes of Samus as you wield the Wiimote. Samus will have power-ups like the Morph Ball and Grapple Beam, as well as tons of other surprise power-ups. By using the Wiimote and Nunchuk controllers, players will also get to explore alien landscapes, hunt for weapons and information, destroy the Phazon seeds, save the planets from corruption, and ultimately, take down Samus’ mortal enemy – Dark Samus.

By using the Wiimote and Nunchuk controllers, players will also get to explore alien landscapes, hunt for weapons and information, destroy the Phazon seeds, save the planets from corruption, and ultimately, take down Samus’ mortal enemy – Dark Samus.

Game Storyline: The game is set six months after the events that took place on planet Aether, and The Galactic Federation’s network computer, Aurora Unit, is suddenly and completely corrupted with some sort of virus. Believed to be the sinister work of Space Pirates, the federation starts to contact bounty hunters starting with Samus. The Federation is attacked by the pirates while explaining the situation to the assembled hunters, and naturally, Samus and the hunters rise up to the occasion by defending the Federation capital. They soon find out that the person behind the corruption is the “supposedly dead” Dark Samus, armed with power that no one can withstand.

Special features (powers, moves, etc.): Using the Wiimote and Nunchuk controllers, players can grasp and pull things by using actual arm movements, as well as aim and blast in midair or at a full run. The game also features a new Phazon system wherein Samus will temporarily go into hyper mode if you fill Samus’ Phazon supply to a certain level. When in hyper mode, Samus can pull off incredible feats. However, the downside is that if she exceeds the maximum Phazon level, she’ll perish.

It’s also important to note that for the first time in the Metroid series, Samus’ ship will be used in active game play. And a bit of trivia: the remote sensitivity can be cranked up to expert, which reduces the jumpy, skittery feeling of the pointer. This might also help prevent motion sickness as you delve into the intense game with a first-person perspective.

Metroid Prime 3 was originally set to be the Wii’s launch title, but Retro Studios decided to work on the game some more. We’d have to wait a little bit longer, but if doing so would make the game as brilliant as it’s cracked up to be, then maybe we can deal with a few months delay, eh?
