The Good Design Award is an annual comprehensive design evaluation and commendation program by Japan‘s Ministry of International Trade and Industry. It should be remembered that one of last year’s awardees was actually Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console.

This year’s God Design Award for the product design category went to the Wii, Nintendo’s entry into this current cycle of the console wars. A part of the jury’s explanation for giving the award to the Wii reads:

Unlike previous consoles, the Wii succeeds in offering an intuitive playing style accessible to players of all ages, abilities, and interests, and in this way, the game console has evolved to a communication tool, with physical gaming as the medium.

Obviously, these are virtual games, but it is significant that the developers bring interactive design to life in ways that are not too complex.

Likewise, metaverse Second Life from Linden Lab snagged the award for the communication design category. Despite the current problems the virtual world is facing, people continue to patronage Second Life and the freedom it is offering to users. According to the jury, the MMO title deserves the award because:

It is setting a standard as a new online virtual society. What’s more, values and attitudes of the online community are emerging here, as residents who create 3D content of all kinds using the original development tools retain the copyrights for their creations.

A virtual society linked to the real world by its currency, Second Life holds great potential for further growth.
