Wii servers go live

The title is correct, yesterday the Wii servers went live! Chris Kohler of Game Life tried to connect to Wii online on Friday, November 17, but all he got was a hang at the system-update screen. Yesterday, though, after trying to connect again, the bar started moving and he was connected! As the video above shows (although of poor quality), getting online with the Wii, buying Wii points, and downloading virtual console games is a piece of cake!

Yes, you may be delighted to know that there are updates to Wii online but they might slow you from playing those virtual console games straight away – nothing more than you would expect from a new console. After the First Update finishes, you have to pick your region and then go through yet another update, which we are guessing will be different depending on your region. By the time that’s done, you’ll have Parental Controls installed, and the amazing WiiConnect 24 service will be ready to go, as well as the highly-important Wii Shop.

What can you do in the Wii shop? You get three major options: add Wii Points with a points card, download Wii Ware (original software for Wii), or buy Virtual Console games. Before rushing to the Virtual Console section, you might want to see what games are available:

  • Donkey Kong (NES)
  • Legend of Zelda (NES)
  • Mario Bros. (NES)
  • Soccer (NES)
  • Pinball (NES)
  • Wario’s Woods (NES)
  • Solomon’s Key (NES)
  • F-Zero (SNES)
  • Sim City (SNES)
  • Altered Beast (GEN)
  • Sonic (GEN)
  • Super Mario 64 (64)

Don’t you just want play them now? Use the Wii buyer’s guide to know where you can get yourself a console or take a look to see if Amazon have one in stock!
