Worldwide Surveillence on the Horizon
In conjunction with our government’s decision to force cell phone providers to allow the government to electronically track the whereabouts of all cell phone users, a group called Transparent City, led by Derek Lomas, has plans to use the collected data to create a real time, 3D, video representation of all the cell phone toting residents in action.
The corporate side of the project will provide a unique look at how we interact socially, while providing a unfiltered look at what we do all day. Using an interactive system, similar to Google maps, the user will be able to easily sort through the data.
The government has its sights aimed at gaining the ability to track the location of cell phone users and monitor the conversations of the phones it is tracking in real time.
The federal government, in conjunction with the cell phone companies, initiated the surveillance plan after 911 in order to allow 911 emergency services throughout the nation to automatically determine the location of emergency calls coming from cell phones.
Currently, the Transparent City project is still in the planning stages. The government, on the other hand, has been steadily rolling out its part of the surveillance infrastructure since 911. Already participation in the government surveillance project has reached many major cities and it is still growing.
