WoW sets the mood for a little lovin’

Love is in the air in World of Warcraft, and that’s true regardless of Valentine’s Day in WoW. It’s been talked about in-game and in the forums, since there have been a number accurate stories about actual couples settling together from playing WoW and meeting inside the game. Nethaera dropped by to give out Blizzard‘s official word on the phenomenon:

We’ve received many such stories before. A European couple recently sent in their story to the European community team as well. For as much deception as can occur online, there is often just as much truth. After knowing someone for a long while even through the game, you can begin to sort what is true from what is false especially since things that are untrue will come to light at some point since no lie is ever completely successful at staying covered up for long.

I have also made many friends/acquaintances through online gaming and networking that I would have never had the opportunity to meet before. In many cases those friends have gone beyond just within the country, but throughout the world.

It’s not uncommon for couples to meet over the Internet. There are many other ways to meet your significant other over the Web, but in a game that sports 6 million people spread over several realms, there’s a safe assumption that you could meet someone that suits you just right. And it’s a big surprise, too. Some male gamers play as female characters in-game and it is prone to causing confusion.

Whether it be friendship, dating or binding marriage, the game can set the mood for a good healthy relationship. That’s the principle behind MMOs after all: community and social structure comes with social interaction. So next time someone barks at you to get a life, you can proudly tell them, “I already have.”
