Wow! You’re A WoW Player?

WoW

We thought of something like this before, putting our impressive records and achievements in the MMORPG world in our resume. But we thought, what if our employer doesn’t know anything about MMORPG? Surprised? Yes, its a fact that some people has never heard of MMORPG before. Well, its good if you are are applying to a company that is familiar to video games like QJ.

Interestingly, we came across a blog, and basing from his/her words, we can safely assume that he is an MMO player. In his blog, he discussed the implications of having your achievements in World of Warcraft, currently the world’s most successful massively multiplayer online role-playing game, appear in your resume. Not a bad idea, eh? But according to him, the downside is if your employer is one of the people who associates video games such as MMO with lazy people.

If you are the employer, would you not be impressed at these achievements, especially if you know that this candidate is a college graduate:

  • Leading the #1 guild (with over 200 active members) on World Of Warcraft‘s Dalaran server.
  • Organizing 40-person raid groups 4 nights a week to conquer the most challenging dungeons in record time.
  • Organizing the guild to collect necessary resources for each raid, including health/mana potions, herbs, and other special items.
  • Keeping guild site up to date and moderating forums.
  • Also designed a custom raid points tracker.
  • Actively recruiting new members.
  • Researching new dungeons and formulating strategies for defeating bosses.

We, MMORPG players, have been bombarded with so many issues regarding the negative effects of playing MMO. One of which is that most players are becoming more addicted to the game and dubbed WoW as “World of Warcrack”. So okay, we get the idea: too much of something is not really good, especially if you can’t already discern how to control your love of the game.

But then again, these games are not all negative. They have positive effects too and we must agree with the blogger in his idea that they provide a platform for players to enhance their leadership and organizational skills, especially those who are maintaining a guild. In a paper from Open Computing Facility (OCF) maintained by the University of California at Berkeley, it is said that MMOs have the ability to create new and lasting relationships between players. Other positive social effects also includes:

– players are provided with meaning that may not exist in their real lives, i.e. you can feel a sense of “belonging-ness” by joining a guild or a group

-MMORPGs can be a way to foster a stronger bond with others especially with family member. Parents can play with MMORPG with their children and learn something about each other (i.e. likes and dislikes) that can improve the way they interact with each other. Besides, basing from our own experience, the fun in gaming makes a serious conversion a less intimidating.

Going back to our resume, an employer must have a keen eye for details even on achievements. The fact that this candidate can lead a guild online must mean something very positive. Talking from our experience, it’s really hard to maintain a guild online especially if your guild consists of large number of members.
