Shuhei Yoshida - Image 1Sony‘s president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida recently posted his thoughts over at ThreeSpeech and said that first-party games are now more vital than ever in this generation of cross-platform releases from major publishers. PS3 - Image 1Shuhei Yoshida, Sony‘s president of worldwide studios, was recently quoted from the ThreeSpeech blog saying that first-party titles are now more important than ever if a platform is to succeed. He said that it’s completely understandable for third-party publishers to release cross-platform games, making the role of Sony studios more vital than ever.

“In this generation, it costs much more to develop one product, it’s just natural for third-party publishers trying to recoup the investment from multiple platforms,” Yoshida said. “I think that’s pure economic pressure, pushing most of the third parties to move from some exclusive titles to more multi-platform titles.”

He then commented that Sony understands this trend perfectly and they are aware that if the PlayStation 3 is to compete well with its rivals, it needs to deliver more high-quality exclusive games from its studios.

Yoshida praised big publishers EA and Activision for high-quality titles that are released on the PS3 and the Xbox 360. He hinted that Sony is well aware that the games of the two publishers will continually be released on both consoles, but he did say a little something that would give the PS3 the edge.

“Some of the titles, I expect, will have something extra because of the PS3’s abilities and the space on the Blu-ray format,” he hinted. That’s looking like a more and more valid statement as PS3 titles have started to come on this year.
