Big things are heading their way for Japan‘s pocket-sized Final Fantasy tower defense game. The latest issue of Famitsu reveals that Crystal Defenders will be heading to consoles, via the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and WiiWare services.

The game was released late last year for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and what sets it apart from other tower defense titles is that it uses character classes (and sprites) from the Final Fantasy: Tactics Advanced series.

The WiiWare version of the game, Crystal Defenders R1, will have the gameplay mechanics intact – position your troops, lay waste to the advancing army, etc. – but it isn’t a normal port either. Famitsu reveals that it will focus a bit more on the story and support Wi-Fi Connection.

Meanwhile, details on the PSN and XBLA versions are still under wraps, but the way IGN describes it, Famitsu’s term for these two versions is that they’re “evolved ports.” Meaning… full-fledged remakes? Hey, I definitely wouldn’t mind an HD tower defense game that’s FF-themed!

For now, only the WiiWare version is set in stone – it’s going live on January 27 for 1000 Wii Points – while release details for the PSN and XBLA versions are still unconfirmed. From what it looks like, Crystal Defenders may only be getting a Japanese release since they didn’t mention anything for other regions.
