Less than a week to go before the release of Halo 3, and as the minutes count down we are given a peek into one of the game’s multiplayer maps, Isolation. You might remember that it is one of the 12 names of maps that have been plucked from the Beta code. Since the Isolation map turns out to be true, there’s a good chance the other 11 exist as well.

IGN talked with Tyson Green, Multiplayer Design Lead of Halo 3 at Bungie to get info on the multiplayer map. Isolation is a medium sized map set in an inclined landscape with bunkers on top and at the bottom. A few trees block the way to the top while underground tunnels prevent easy access to the bunkers at the bottom. Each of the bunkers has slots for firing at charging enemy forces.

The bunkers can easily work to your advantage as a mini-fortress of sorts, but can also serve as a deathtrap, blocking any means of escape. It was designed symmetrically, in such a way that you can shoot from one base straight to the other. The open plains between them make it hard to cross the divide.

The map was designed primarily for Multi Flag CTF but can work just as well for Team Slayer. While the slots are mainly used to shoot out from the bunkers, charging forces could also drop grenades into them, which is a viable tactic. Green adds that “if the other team is being too campy and trying to sit on the flag, they generally get exploded in short order.”

Isolation also holds a secret. But we can’t tell. It’s a secret. Also, we don’t know what it is. Apparently, something “interesting” happens when you play Isolation for a while, but Green doesn’t want to spill on the details. Perhaps the whole map explodes? Hmm, interesting.
