Sony finally ships 50GB dual-layer Bluray discs

50GB Blu-ray disc

As of today Sony have begun shipping their 50GB dual-layer recordable Blu-ray discs, only two months after they were scheduled to be released.the arrival of 50GB Blu-ray Disc media is an important milestone in the evolution of this new format,” said Mike Lucas, director of marketing for Sony ElectronicsÂ’ Media and Application Solutions Division. The capacity represents more than four hours of HD quality video, at a 24 Mbps transfer rate, allowing users to take full advantage of SonyÂ’s Blu-ray Disc burners and VAIO desktop and notebook computers.

There’s no doubt that 50GB Blu-ray discs are a great venture, but it still stands that Sony have missed their initial deadline of June by a couple of months, and we still don’t have Blu-ray rewritable discs on the market. Hopefully, the delay will translate to a better end product.

Also, the 50GB dual layer recordable disc has a suggested retail price of around $48, which is a bit more expensive than what we’re was expecting. But as will all new technology, if you want to stay ahead of the game you have to be willing to pay for the extra price.

The company also confirmed that it plans to start shipping 50GB dual layer rewritable BD media later this year. Hopefully, this will mean before Christmas so you can really test out that new Bluray drive that you have, maybe even in your launch PS3. We know we will!
