The End of the World as We Know It: Shin Megami Tensei Online
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the apocalypse, or the end of the world, or the sundering, or whatever you might want to call the (literal) hand of god (notice the lowercase) firing a beam that destroys most of known civilization. Well, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it if you’re dead because it won’t matter, and if you’re alive, you can probably make something of yourself.
You just have to watch out for the demons, though.
If there’s anything that strikes us most notably about Atlus, it’s that post-apocalyptic, religious reference-filled Shin Megami Tensei series. Where else can you play a game where you begin with the end of the world and become a demon?
Well, Atlus and Cave have been developing it for a long while now, and we’re getting close to an actual release of an actual post-apocalyptic MMORPG. It’s called Shin Megami Tensei Online: Imagine. Following the destruction of Tokyo, there is now a new society, which seems to be centered on a monolithic structure known as “Shinjuku Babel,” and you’re there to help rebuild the place, become stronger, and protect what’s left of the world from demons. It also seems that, like most Shin Megami Tensei games, you get to find yourself a demon partner, from some monstrous humanoid thing to the ever lovable Jack Frost demon.
Unfortunately, there haven’t been a lot of English updates for this currently Japan-only online game, but it should be heading for Japanese store shelves later this year. Till then, enjoy some screenshots and concept art!
Check the screens and concept art after the jump!
