Vital PS3 questions answered

PS3 101With IGN recently receiving their retail version of the PS3, they immediately got down to testing the unit and answering some important questions posted by their readers. So, let’s get started and see what they found out.

Q: Is it possible to copy MP3 files to the hard drive from a data CD or USB memory stick?
A: Yes. As long as you’re on the appropriate tab (photo or music), it is possible to detect gadgets such as iPods, and all tracks and all images can be viewed or listened to, then copied onto the hard drive.

Q: Do all downloads have to be finished before the PS3 can be used? Do you have to stop the music you’re listening to in order to keep using the PS3?
A: No. You can keep those in the background as you fiddle with the other sections of the console.

Q: Does the PS3 have a “sleep” mode?
A: No.

Q: Can Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones connect to the PS3 for video or photo transfers?
A: No.

Q: Can one chat with more than one person at a time?
A: UNCONFIRMED as they have not yet taken the PS3 online. However, they did confirm that a Bluetooth-enabled keyboard can be connected to the PS3 for easier chatting.

Q: How goes the browser?
A: GREAT. Six pages can be pulled up at once and cycles through via the shoulder buttons. However, it has been noted that the PS3 reached its limit once three media-heavy pages were opened, though one can still manually cycle through them.

Q: Do Bluetooth headsets work with the PS3?
A: No, sadly.

Q: How goes the Playstation Store?
A: UNCONFIRMED, as IGN’s attempts to create an account for the Playstation store have so far been unsuccessful. A few more days perhaps?

Q: Can one set the region for the sake of backwards compatibility?
A: No. Japanese PSOne and PS2 disks were merely recognized as disks and nothing more.

Q: Will the PS3 adapt to the resolution of my TV?
A: Yes. You may specify the resolution that you want your PS3 to use.

Q: Can PS2 S-Video cables be used with the PS3?
A: Yes. In fact, any standard HDMI cable can also be used.

Q: Does the Guitar Hero controller work on the PS3 if used with the USB adapter?
A: No. The SG guitar can’t be activated since it lacks the “Playstation” button on the controller which one will be prompted to press.

(… and drum roll please!)

Q: What is the warranty length of the PS3?
A: One year.
