2K: BioShock 2 PC activations handled by GFWL, SecuROM is for disc-check only

Yesterday we posted the PC requirements for BioShock 2. Among the items mentioned was a five-time activation limit. According to 2K Games, however, that was just an error. And SecuROM? Apparently they’re just using that as a disc check system.

Posting on the official 2K boards, community manager Elizabeth clarified that SecuROM will be used only for disc check. The five activations limit is actually 15 and will be handled by Games for Windows Live. If you need to install the game for the 16th time, you’ll have to call Microsoft to get your key reset:

 

I want to clear this up: SecuROM for the retail version is ONLY a disc check, and there are NO limits for it. As for GFWL, there are 15 activations that can be reset if you reach the cap. There is no 5 activation limit anywhere with this game – in any version whatsoever.

 

That one-time online activation is still required, however, regardless of whether or not you want to stick to the single-player mode and skip multiplayer entirely:

 

When you install the game, you have a one-time online activation. That happens, regardless of what you do with the game afterwards. This is part of Games for Windows Live’s process for installation. If you then want to create an offline profile and play only Single Player, you can do that without problem, or online access.

 

BioShock 2 for PC launches on February 9, 2010. The game will also be available on PS3 and Xbox 360.
