A Glimpse Into The Future Of Second Life

Second Life LogoSecond Life (SL), a virtual world developed by Linden Lab where people can literally live a second life through their online avatars, can finally look forward to some major developments soon, says Linden Lab’s CEO Philip Rosedale in the recent Second Life Community Convention in San Francisco.

Noting how far the world of SL has developed since it first emerged from beta in 2001, the company CEO has gone ahead and talked about their plans for the future of SL.

Stressing the fact that they are currently hiring new developers to improve the game, Rosedale says the company is now prioritizing on performing a major overhaul in the entire virtual world. Besides improving on the rather clunky user interface, they have renewed efforts to reduce the downtime. To do this, they are planning on having biweekly client updates instead of once a week, and they are also developing a feature known as the HetGrid or Heterogeneous Grid. This grid is expected to help since it won’t force users to download an update whenever Linden Lab adds or changes a feature.

The CEO also stated they they would be concentrating on fixing problems with parts of Second Life’s code, which have been sloppily running since 2001. Other new features and improvements that they have been hoping to implement soon would be a new system in organizing and managing user groups, as well as the feature known as “Puppeteering”. This last feature will allows SL citizens to manipulate their avatars more naturally and to create new custom animations for themselves without having to use expensive third-party applications such as Poser.
