Apogee uncovers Duke Nukem Trilogy details

Duke Nukem - Image 1Duke Nukem: Trilogy is a go for the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS according to developer Apogee. They shared some details on the game such as what will comprise the trifecta of games, what weapons will be in play, what kind of game it is, and so on. More on that in the full article.

Duke Nukem - Image 1Old fans of the once-mighty Duke Nukem franchise have been egging 3D Realms to finally show some progress in Duke Nukem Forever, but the sad truth is that there’s no hope in sight for such a thing to happen. Fortunately, Apogee has parted ways with the devs and decided to create their own Duke Nukem games to finally cut old fans some slack.

Enter Duke Nukem: Trilogy which is slated for the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS. This one will have three games, of course, and they’ll be called Critical Mass, Chain Reaction, and Proving Grounds. Details on them were earlier spilled by Apogee CEO Terry Nagy and they are as follows:

  • The games are for release in summer of 2009
  • The devs are aiming for a Teen rating on the DS and a Mature rating for the PSP.
  • This will be a trilogy of shooters which will mix different elements. The DS version will be a side-scroller primarily with cover and fire mechanics along with some third-person, over the shoulder elements.
  • The PSP version will NOT be a side-scroller. It’s going to be mostly a third-person affair with top-down and over the shoulder elements. A bit of first-person shooting will also be in store.
  • The views will be directed by the game and not player-controlled.
  • Critical Mass will be futuristic and set in space. You’ll have lots of crazy toys to play with and hordes of alien fiends to use them on.
  • Chain Reaction will be set close to the present day. Weapons, of course, will be pretty close to what we have now. It wasn’t stated what enemies Duke will be facing.
  • The Proving Grounds game will be in a 1945 backdrop. As you may guess, Duke will be doing the heroics here against Axis forces.
  • Miniguns and pipe bombs are due to make a comeback.
