Big Apple gamers form block-long conga line for a PS3

Start spreading the news… The PS3 is making it in NYC and as the song goes, if it can make it there it’ll make it everywhere. But enough of our Liza Minnelli/Frank Sinatra imitation. Reports have it that hundreds of wannabe-PS3 owners were out in full force outside SonyStyle Plaza in midtown Manhattan to get their hands on Sony‘s shiny console. Welcome to the west coast version of PS3 mania.

Unlike other retail outlets with limited units, the PS3 bash at SonyPlaza promised to deliver “hundreds” of PS3s. This attracted a line of gamers reached around the corner of the next block. At the very beginning of the PS3 conga line (and sure future PS3 owner-to-be) is New Yorker Angel Paredes.

In case you’re wondering what it took to be first in line, Angel camped out at the store November 13, Monday evening. That’s four days of his life he will never get back so we hope the PS3 would be worth his time. Which probably is, considering the guy has been waiting for the PS3 for over a year. Good thing he didn’t have to camp out at the store for that long.

But not everyone in line are true-blue PS3 fans. One man in line pledged his allegiance to his Xbox 360. So what the hell was he doing there? “I may get a PS3 later, but for now, I think I’m selling mine,” he said. If that’s not an invitation for a mob beating, we don’t know what is!

Fortunately for him spirits were reportedly up and bouncy. Probably because the reality that not everyone in line will go home with a PS3 hasn’t sunk in yet. Wait till the store runs out of units. That will curdle the mood. And if we were the Xbox 360 guy, we’d be some place else pronto!
