Boop-Boop-A-Doop and a Vo-De-O-Do: “The Ship” is Ready To Sail

The Ship

I admit it – I harbor a powerful, obsessive nostalgia for the “Jazz Era.” Hot jazz, bathtub gin, smoky speakeasies, “flivvers” with rumble seats, “Art-Deco”  and dances like the “Charleston” and the “Black Bottom” hold quite the romantic images for me. (Granted, medical science was primitive, civil rights for people of African descent were non-existent, religious extremism was rampant, the Harding and Coolidge Administrations were beyond corrupt, murdering thugs like Al Capone and Dutch Schulz terrorized major urban centers and the American farmer was struggling to survive – but hey, we’re talking about the “image” here, not the substance. Did I mention “hot jazz?”)

In any event, if this sort of thing appeals to you, it might be worth your time to check out “The Ship Online.”

Published by Outerlight Ltd., The Ship is a new MMO game, using the Valve‘s Source animation engine, set on a luxury ocean liner of the 1920’s. A mixture of Anything Goes and an Agatha Christie mystery, this is essentially an assassin’s tournament. Upon boarding The Ship, you are given the name of a fellow passenger – whom you must find and stealthily murder. Watch out, though, because if you’re caught, you’ll do hard time – and as you’re hunting your quarry, someone else is hunting you!

Beta testing of The Ship has been underway since 7 June. Initial problems with Direct X have been addressed, and release is scheduled for 11 July. In the meantime, check out the trailer.
