Over at the PlayStation Blogs, Criterion Games has taken over the spotlight to herald the coming of their Codename: Cagney update for Burnout Paradise (PS3, Xbox 360). The free DLC will drop on the 10th of July and will have plenty to offer veterans of the title.

Criterion Games says that the new features in Codename: Cagney will be game-changing. The addition of Timed and Freeburn Challenges should deepen the already impressive automotive mayhem that the game offers, and you’ll be glad to know that plans are underway for the adoption of a Trophy system.

Freeburn Challenge gets your freak on by having you meet up to seven other players online and just go nuts in the massive city. See who can drive the farthest against incoming traffic, see who can do the most barrel rolls in the air, and dare each other to take your cars into the sky for death-defying leaps.

Timed Challenges, as Criterion puts it, are a set of 70 Freeburns which players will have to do in a race against the clock. Players in this mode will meet in a specific spot in Paradise City and a countdown timer starts ticking the moment a game is set up. Once this happens, it’s every man for himself as everyone dashes to complete the crazy tasks.

Sounds simple enough, but Criterion says this can trigger fits of obsession among players to shed a few ticks from their best times. The “one more time” feeling is what the devs believe will keep players coming back for more.

As for the Trophies in Burnout Paradise, they won’t be hitting the game with the Codename: Cagney update, but Criterion promises that in future patches, they will be implemented to give players something to show for their efforts in the name of chaos. We’ll be sure to relay you that announcement when it finally comes.
