Buyers beware: Rotting Blu-ray discs spotted… literally

There’s some commotion at the AVS forums lately with a lot of people complaining about disc rot: spots appearing on the coating of their Blu-ray discs which not only look unsightly, but also renders the storage medium unreadable.

The spot appears on the disc coating for no apparent reason and cannot be rubbed off even after proper cleaning procedures are applied. The most rampant incidence is with the movie “The Prestige,” with some other whines and moans here and there.

The scope of the problem is almost impossible to determine as of the moment but those who experienced the problem are encouraged to ask for a replacement in the store where they got it. If enough incidents are reported, retailers can escalate this to the proper avenues for appropriate action to be taken.
