DIY: Wireless Sega Genesis controller for the Wii

While gamers can enjoy the Nintendo Wii’s line up of Virtual Console titles by way of the Classic Controller, it doesn’t feel right sometimes – some of these games are of the Sega bloodline after all. And because they carry special memories from our early childhood, it’s just more reassuring to relive the nostalgia with a proper Genesis three-button controller.

For those who feel this way, we’ve picked up word of hack that emptyset has been tinkering with. As you can probably guess, it’s a wireless “Wiified” version of the Genesis controller. The creator comments that he built this out of love for classic Sega games, and was also inspired by and based on the SNES and NES wireless controller previously designed by Mark Feldman. Here are the needed parts:

  • PIC16F84A
  • iPod mini replacement battery
  • Some bits of perfboard
  • A small slider switch
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • Panel mount LED
  • 434 MHz wireless transmitter
  • 4 MHz crystal
  • Sega Genesis controller with a surface mount circuit board

Assembly proper is a simple matter of soldering the corresponding wires, parts and battery to the Genesis controller’s mother board. There’s also the matter of programming the PIC, with the source codes available over at emptyset’s site. Just click on the Read link for this controller’s full build instructions. We imagine that the Sega fans will want this to go with their Wii, all the more that Vectorman‘s been sighted on VC.
