Free for all PvPs, anyone?

It seems that some players have major bloodthirst as we came across a thread over at the WoW forums asking why there isn’t a free for all PvP realm. That means that there would be no factions, no classes, and probably no mercy either – just pure chaos. DoTs raining everywhere and you have nowhere to run. Players are torn in half by the possibility – well, the argument has spanned through 14 pages and still ongoing.

Why doesn’t WoW have FFA PvP realms when other MMOs like Dark Age of Camelot and Asheron’s Call have them. It would mean that players would be able to fight anyone, anytime, anywhere. Blizzard poster Tseric addressed the question with a number of points:

  • “FFA realms do not build and hold a player base as well as a standard rule set.” People will eventually get tired of killing or getting killed. Lowbies would be obliterated on a daily basis. Hostility would be everywhere with everyone frothing at the mouth.
  • Changing the ruleset would require a significant change in coding, therefore Blizzard would have to support two different clients at a time.
  • So far, there just isn’t enough demand to justify the cost necessary to make the changes.

Oh, well. He didn’t say that it’s not going to happen and it’s not possible, just not now. The most important thing that the devs would have to consider is WoW’s lore. It’s an idea, but just how long would it be able to sustain itself? At least for now, players would have to be contented with the PvP servers and arenas.
