GDC 2007: Fable 2 dog demo video and details

In the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2007, Peter Molyneux, the head of Lionhead Studios, gave the details on the game Fable 2 for the Xbox 360. One of the new features is the addition of a dog as a sidekick. So what’s Fable 2 going to be like? From what little information Mr. Molyneux let slip, the game seems to be set in Albion some 500 years after the original Fable. Instead of a medieval setting, the game seems more colonial with early period firearms making a showing occasionally.

You and the dog will be involved pretty deeply, as it acts as your compass and companion as well as an additional fighter when you go into combat. There were quite a few things that caught our attention in the video. The dog will actually run around and show affection (even playing fetch with you). When you scold it, it lowers its head, thoroughly chastised and can even get scared. When the dog gets damaged enough, it will actually limp as it moves around. (Woe to whatever damages the dog as it looks like you will really get attached to it.)

A quick fact sheet about the dog in Fable 2, taken from Mr. Peter Molyneux’s presentation last March 8:

  • The dog is your sidekick, but it acts as an NPC in a sense because it will act on its own accord.
  • The dog’s actions are based on “dynamic desire mapping” technology which includes target prioritization in battle (based on your equipped weapon).
  • The dog will age, gain and lose weight. Their coats will change based on it’s alignment.
  • There will be mini-games which involve the dog.
  • There will be no mini-map. Instead your dog will guide you through Albion.

In the end, we’ll bring you more on the game as its 2008 release date crawls nearer.
