Now THIS is what we call innovation. Brilliant graduate student Johnny Chung Lee came up with what could be one of the most amazing things that can be done with the Wii system: Head Tracking.

Using a Wii remote and the sensor bar, Lee managed to replicate a virtual environment that lets the TV monitor display objects as if you are looking into a real room, with realistic illusion of depth and space in real time. It might sound confusing at first, but once you see the video, it’s pretty simple to understand.

The set up surprisingly didn’t cost a lot: all it took to create the amazing potential gaming experience was a Wii remote, the sensor bar, a pair of glasses with LEDs, and some software that he’s created.

Just so you know, Head Tracking technology is currently being used in some flight simulators, lending a lot of realism in the virtual flying experience. In this era of next-gen gaming, it’s a bit surprising why this impressive technology hasn’t penetrated the console gaming yet.

After watching Lee’s remarkable presentation, which you can watch in the video below, we at QJ will have to echo his words, addressed to Wii game developers: We wanna see some games with this innovation!
