Halo 3 Content Director Still Won’t Spill the Beans

O' ConnorMTV‘s Stephen Totilo was right when he wrote, Bungie Content Manager Frank O’Connor has mastered art of tease.” Frank O’Connor already knows everything there is to know about Halo 3 – he even has a copy of the latest version of the game in his Xbox 360 – but he still keeps mum about the details. All he’ll ever let us know are those teasers contained in his Halo 3 weekly updates that never tell much about what we expect from the game.

Even to his closest friends and family, he never breaks this Bungie pact of secrecy. Asked about the highly anticipated FPS for the 360, he coyly answers friends and relatives, “What’s a ‘Halo?'”. Even his wife is clueless about the game – and every time he gives that stalling “What’s a ‘Halo?'” response, his wife hits him (we can’t blame her!).

All these efforts of keeping the Halo 3 details a secret despite serious threats – O’Connor shares some notes that they receive: ‘You guys suck. Why don’t you spend less time with these stupid updates and more time fixing this game? I hope you die. If I ever meet you, I will kill you.’ – what gives? Well, we do have to agree that to keep a game moving without much interruption from the public, a company needs to be quiet about the project. Yet just to make sure that hardcore gamers are kept wanting, tidbits of the game have to be released occasionally.

This pact of secrecy does not mean though that everyone at Bungie has managed to put a lid on the secrets held by the game. O’Connor says that just recently, a beautiful woman has confused a Bungie employee enough for him to divulge an important detail. “One of our guys was being interviewed by a very, very, very attractive woman and he blurted something out because he was confused by her attractiveness, apparently. He blurted out one of the biggest ticket items in the entire game.” Fortunately (for Bungie and unfortunately for the fans), the reporter agreed to edit out the detail in her story.

Don’t expect O’Connor though to make the same mistake…especially at this point. “We’re in a really, really secretive period right now. We don’t want to give away any features. We don’t want to give away any plot. We don’t want to give away any locations. We don’t want to give away any weapons. All that stuff is pretty much final. The funny thing is as secretive as we are now, everything is sort of carved into stone,” he says.

Secrecy and cunning, Bungie is thy name. Oh well, with the way gamers are on their toes awaiting Halo 3 with abated breath, Bungie sure is doing a good job keeping us all excited.
