HD DVD loses another backer: Wal-Mart going Blu-ray exclusive
HD DVD is taking yet another blow in the format war as Wal-Mart has announced that it will be going Blu-ray, and will be phasing out their HD DVD line of discs and players. More in the full article.
HD DVD has been suffering a number of blows the past couple of months, with a slew of backers leaving the camp. Now another major backer is going over to the Blu-ray camp: the discount department store chain, Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart has announced that by June, Sam’s Club stores will only sell Blu-ray discs and hardware players, phasing out HD DVD completely. For now, Wal-Mart stores will continue to sell HD DVD products, but the shift to press Blu-ray will be felt.
Gary Severson, Senior VP of Wal-Mart’s Home Entertainment department, says that: “WeÂ’ve listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases.”
