Hideo Kojima on 1080p and HD: dirty is the new clean

Click to enlargeRemember a few days ago, when we posted about the recent GamePro magazine? sling just posted a snapshot of one part of Hideo Kojima‘s interview in that issue. And it reveals something quite interesting to note.

Yes, he comments on a possible game in the future for the Wii, but that’s not entirely shocking. What we want you to check out is the bottom part of the snapshot which reveals Kojima’s thoughts on 1080p and HD capabilities.

To quote: “MGS games tend not to care about how clean the screen looks… we deliberately make the graphics look dirtier to give the atmosphere more life.”

So, “dirty” is the new “clean.” Personally, I actually would agree with that. Making a game too clean-looking makes it look artificial and unrealistic. Remember Doctor Cid from the “Final Fantasy: Spirits Within” movie? They deliberately gave him all those pockmarks and wrinkles so that he would look all the more real. Making him look “clean” without the aging factor wouldn’t have been believable.
