Hills and mountains between us: flightless in Azeroth

Flight!Have you ever wondered why there are no flying mounts in Azeroth? And isn’t it that a lot of people are highly anticipating World of Warcraft‘s Burning Crusade expansion mainly because, in the Outland, creatures there can supposedly give you the ability of free-roaming flight?

Drysc from Blizzard answers this question so that people could understand why they never really incorporated flying mounts in Azeroth. Honestly speaking, doing such would require them a heck of a lot of time, money, and programmers. If they developed flying mounts they would have to:

  • correct all of the terrain outside of the ‘walkable’ areas
  • fill in other areas of the map that can’t be seen but known to be there
  • think about what happens when the edge of the map is reached
  • rebuild our server architecture

These are just a few of the reasons he stated, but all in all they’d need teams of people just working on one class of code and a long time to test and further refine the expansion. He does mention that, while they currently don’t have the time and resources to allocate to such a project, flying mounts could be possible.
